Illinois commission to partially fund bridge project, crossing upgrades
advertisement
The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) recently approved a $23 million bridge project in Chicago and two grade crossing improvement projects totaling about $290,000.
The commission granted the city of Chicago approval to reconstruct a bridge over CSX Transportation’s track. Built in 1939, the 20-span structure provides a little more than 21 feet of clearance over the tracks and trucks are prohibited from using the bridge.
The new five-span structure will provide vertical clearance of more than 23 feet over the tracks. The ICC will provide the city $2 million from the Grade Crossing Protection Fund (GCPF) for the project. The city will cover all remaining costs.
Meanwhile, the commission agreed to cover 95 percent of project costs through the GCPF to upgrade a crossing in Buckner on CN/Illinois Central Railroad Co.’s line. To be completed in May 2010, the $149,000 project calls for installing automatic flashing light signals and improving highway approaches. CN/IC will cover remaining costs.
In addition, the ICC agreed to cover 85 percent of project costs through the GCPF to upgrade a CN/IC crossing in Lincoln. Also to be completed in May 2010, the $141,000 project calls for installing automatic flashing light signals and improving highway approaches. CN/IC will cover all remaining installation costs, and future operating and maintenance expenses.
The GCPF provides $27 million in motor fuel-tax proceeds annually for crossing upgrades and the construction or reconstruction of grade separations.
