Former National Industrial Transportation League (NITL) President Harry Gobrecht died on Aug. 10 at his home in San Clemente, Calif. He was 85.

From 1980 to 1982, Gobrecht served as NITL president — at the time, the League’s highest elected office. He served at a “particularly important time” in NITL’s history, according to the Aug. 13 edition of Notice, NITL’s weekly e-newsletter. During Gobrecht’s tenure, NITL celebrated its 75th anniversary, and he “stressed the need for the League to take a new direction” in the aftermath of economic deregulation in the air, highway and rail sectors, the writers of Notice noted. Also during his tenure: The “t” in NITL changed from “traffic” to “transportation.”

After serving as NITL president, Gobrecht chaired NITL’s Policy and Planning Committee, during which time he spearheaded a restructuring of the League’s standing committees and policies.

From 1948 to 1987, Gobrecht served U.S. Gypsum Co., ultimately as corporate vice president of transportation. In 1982, he received the John T. McCullough Award, which is given annually to logistics professionals who provide exemplary service to the freight transportation industry.
