In terms of total carloads, Kansas City Southern de México not in a 'slump'

On Feb. 3, we reported that Kansas City Southern de México S.A. de C.V. (KCSM) remained “mired in a traffic slump in January.” But the “slump” referred to the railroad’s originating carloads and didn’t reflect KCSM’s total traffic. KCSM receives from other railroads a significant portion of its total carload traffic.

During the four-week period ending Jan. 28, KCSM’s total cars originated and received totaled 44,208 units, a 2.1 percent decrease compared with 2005’s first four weeks. Carloads originated dropped 15.9 percent to 27,909 units but carloads received rose 36 percent to 16,299 units.
