Increased traffic volume boosts KCS' Q1 financials

Kansas City Southern posted first-quarter 2010 revenue of $436.3 million, up 26 percent compared with first-quarter 2009.
Traffic volume increased 15 percent vs. first-quarter 2009 and 2 percent compared with fourth-quarter 2009. The Class I recorded double-digit revenue growth in several commodity groups, including automotive (76 percent), intermodal (39 percent), agriculture and minerals (28 percent), chemicals and petroleum (25 percent), coal (25 percent), and industrial and consumer products (22 percent).
Operating income more than doubled last year’s Q1 level at $108.2 million. First-quarter operating ratio was 75.2 percent, down from first-quarter 2009’s 86.2 percent. Operating expenses totaled $328.1 million.
