On June 26, Minnesota’s Metro Transit officials opened an eight-mile portion of the first phase of the Hiawatha light-rail line and welcomed a $12.3 million grant from Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for the phase’s second portion.

Officials will use the funds to complete the remaining four miles of the 12-mile system. Scheduled to open in December, the remainder of the line will serve several Minneapolis suburbs.

Once complete, the 17-station line will operate between Minneapolis’ downtown warehouse district to Bloomington, Minn., serving the Metrodome, Minneapolis/St. Paul airport and the Mall of America.
