On Friday, the International Union of Railways (UIC) announced it elected Luc Aliadière director general to succeed Philippe Roumeguère, who plans to retire next month. The election is subject to confirmation by UIC’s general assembly June 28.

Aliadière currently serves as European affairs director for French railway SNCF.

“[During a period] marked by far-reaching changes, liberalization of markets, competition and internationalization, Roumeguère has directed the UIC with farsightedness,” UIC officials said in a prepared statement.

Founded in 1922 to help create uniform conditions for the establishment and operation of railways, the UIC promotes cooperation between freight and passenger railroads worldwide, and international transport via rail. The organization’s 162 members include railroads in Europe, the Middle East, India, Pakistan, Eastern Japan, China, South Africa, Asia, Africa, Australia and the United States.
