International railway union boots up emission calculation tools
advertisement
The International Union of Railways (UIC) and European Environment Agency recently launched two online tools designed to calculate and compare energy consumption and emissions of different freight and passenger transportation modes.
The EcoPassenger tool (available at www.ecopassenger.org) calculates the energy consumption, and CO2 and exhaust atmospheric emissions of passenger trains, cars and airplanes, while the EcoTransIT tool (www.ecotransit.org) calculates the same variables for freight trains, ships, airplanes and trucks.
The tools derive detailed information from the UIC Energy and CO2 emissions database.
