Iowa, Chicago & Eastern to acquire rebuilt, environmentally friendly locomotives

By July 29, Iowa, Chicago & Eastern Railroad Corp. (IC&E) is scheduled to receive the remainder of 60 rebuilt SD40-2 locomotives from General Electric Transportation Systems.
So far, the railroad has received 15 of the units, which feature 3,000-horsepower diesel engines designed to meet U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's "Tier 0" emission standards, according to IC&E parent Cedar American Rail Holdings Inc.'s May newsletter.
The upgraded locomotives will feature insulated cabs and new overlapping cab doors, heated windshields, new floors, event recorders, alterers, digital speedometers, refrigerators and high-capacity heaters.
"All internal power assemblies are being yanked, and all the pumps and bearings are being replaced — only the crankshaft stays," said Jeff Richmond, Cedar American's director of locomotive fleet.
IC&E plans to use the rebuilt locomotives — which might total 55 instead of the original order for 60 — to replace 60 SD40-2s the railroad previously leased from First Union Rail last year. GETS originally built the locomotives for Union Pacific Railroad.
