Johnstown America's custom-built, rapid-discharge hoppers coming to Canadian gypsum miner

advertisement

By June's end, Johnstown America Corp. plans to deliver 132 automatic-discharge hopper cars to National Gypsum (Canada) Ltd., which operates an open-pit gypsum mine in Nova Scotia.

National Gypsum plans to use the 44-foot, 286,000-pound-capacity cars to move gypsum rock from its Milford Station mine to the port of Halifax, where the gypsum would be shipped to U.S. and Canadian customers.

The all-steel cars' discharge gates incorporate Johnstown America's MegaFlo™ feature, designed to provide better sealing, smoother door operation and faster lading discharge.

The car builder is custom-building the hoppers to place car ends close to the couplers, bringing the ends of adjacent cars closer to each other to comply with National Gypsum's loading system.

The mining company currently moves gypsum rock in railroad-supplied gondolas in rotary-dump service. Because the Halifax unloading facility's dumper needed to be replaced, National Gypsum decided to modify its dump pit to accommodate rapid-discharge cars.
