The U.S. Department of Commerce recently approved an expansion of the Port Freeport Foreign Trade Zone to include two sites along U.S. Highway 59 in Fort Bend County, Texas — including the CenterPoint Intermodal Center – Houston Metro that’s under construction in Rosenberg.
A joint venture between Kansas City Southern and CenterPoint Properties, the 630-acre center will be adjacent to a newly opened Kansas City Southern Railway Co. intermodal facility, which will handle containers moving throughout the Unites States and Mexico. A logistics park, CenterPoint Intermodal Center is designed to accommodate more than 7 million square feet of industrial space.
“The approval of the Foreign Trade Zone makes this site more competitive with intermodal centers within Texas and other adjoining states,” said Barkley Peschel, vice president of development and operations for the Greater Fort Bend Economic Development Council, in a prepared statement. “In addition, the direct access to Mexico will provide new opportunities for partnerships with Mexican manufacturers.”
