KCS settles into new downtown K.C. digs

Kansas City Southern April 8 moved into a new corporate headquarters in a 305,000-square-foot office park located in downtown Kansas City, Mo.'s Quality Hill area.
KCS signed a 17-year lease on five floors of the six-story building, totaling 119,074 square feet.
Railroad officials in 1995 believed the 1920s building KCS occupied was inadequate because many departments were scattered on several floors or located in an adjacent building. But a 1996 study determined that remodeling was too expensive.
When KCS formed plans in 1999 to separate its financial-services business from the transportation arm, the railroad again studied the older building and determined a new location would be more viable.
KCS officials then approached DST Realty to develop a building that would retain the railroad's headquarters in downtown Kansas City.
