KCS to install power-assisted switches

advertisement

By Nov. 22, Kansas City Southern plans to begin installing power-assisted switches in dark territory on its Vicksburg and Meridian Subdivisions.

Each siding will have a power-assisted switch on one end and a spring switch on the other. As trains approach, crews will be able to throw the power-assisted switches from the train instead of on the ground.

"The new switches will not only allow KCS to further reduce the risk of personal injuries, but also expedite train meets," said Jerry Heavin, KCS senior vice president of operations, in a prepared statement.

The railroad plans to install six power-assisted switches by year end and six more in first-quarter 2003.
