On Oct. 7, Kansas City Southern Railway Co. (KCSR) plans to close the Booth Street crossing in Monroe, La. The closure is part of a five-year, multi-million-dollar corridor project agreement between the Class I and Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LADOTD) to improve public safety at grade crossings statewide.  

Recent upgrades and improvements at nearby crossings, including an overpass and the installation of flashers and gates, have made the Booth Street crossing redundant, KCSR said. Initially, the city of Monroe “rebuffed” requests to close the crossing to obtain more time to advise the community, KCSR officials said in a prepared statement.

The state and KCSR have spent more than $1 million annually since 2006 on projects aimed at improving public safety. The Class I continues to work with LADOTD and the city to improve traffic control devices at crossings and close “unnecessary” crossings.
