Today, Harlan, Ky., officials will hold a ceremony to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the town's first commercial shipment of coal by rail. Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear is invited to speak at the event.

On Aug. 25, 1911, the first rail shipment was originated from a Wallins Creek Coal Co. mine and transported by the L&N Railroad, according to the Harlan County Historical Network.

The ceremony will emphasize the historical importance and significance of the coal and rail industries in Harlan County, event organizers say.
