Despite the loss of a major tenant in late 2010, the Port of Long Beach, Calif., ramped up volume in 2011’s first month. Total January volume reached 474,960 20-foot equivalent container units (TEUs), up 10.8 percent compared with January 2010 volume.

Imports rose 11.3 percent to 242,444 TEUs, exports climbed 12.7 percent to 127,546 TEUs and empty container moves increased 7.4 percent to 104,970 TEUs.

In December, California United Terminals — which accounted for about 10 percent of the port’s volume — stopped using the facility.

Meanwhile, the Port of Los Angeles in January handled 660,518 TEUs, up 15.3 percent year over year. Loaded inbound containers rose 14.3 percent to 338,607 TEUs; loaded outbound containers increased 12.6 percent to 159,051 TEUs; total loaded containers climbed 13.7 percent to 497,657 TEUs; and total empties jumped 20.3 percent to 162,860 TEUs.
