L.A. agency advances plan to extend Gold Line to L.A./Ontario airport

The Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension Construction Authority recently completed a 10-month study to examine the feasibility of extending the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Gold Line from its planned terminus in Montclair, Calif., to L.A./Ontario International Airport. The authority also identified two preferred routes for the extension.
LACMTA plans to extend the Gold Line — which opened in 2003 between downtown L.A. and Pasadena — east to Azusa. The project would be funded through the recently passed Measure R sales tax increase and construction could start as early as 2010. The agency then would extend the line further east to the L.A./Ontario airport, which could add up to 14,000 riders to the line daily, LACMTA projects. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has endorsed the extension as part of his plan to shift air passengers from LAX to other regional airports.
The line ultimately would connect the Inland Empire with the San Gabriel Valley regions, and downtown L.A.
