Last month, the Port of Los Angeles handled total volume of 554,913 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), up 5.6 percent compared with February 2010 volume.

The number of loaded inbound containers rose 3.2 percent to 275,886 TEUs, loaded outbound container volume increased 1.6 percent to 150,357 TEUs and number of total loaded containers climbed 2.6 percent to 426,243 TEUs. Total empty container volume soared 16.8 percent to 128,669 TEUs.

In January and February combined, the port handled 1.2 million TEUs, up 10.6 percent compared with the same 2010 period.

The Port of Long Beach, Calif., in February handled 458,336 TEUs, up 10.9 percent compared with February 2010 volume. Loaded inbounds jumped 12.4 percent to 233,660 TEUs, loaded outbounds declined 1 percent to 121,929 TEUs and empties ballooned 25.3 percent to 102,747 TEUs.

“The Port of Long Beach continued to post strong trade numbers,” port officials said in a statement posted on the organization’s web site.

In its current fiscal year through February, the port handled 2.6 million TEUs, up 19 percent. The port’s fiscal year runs from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30.
