League of Railway Industry Women seeks applicants for 2007-08 scholarship program

The League of Railway Industry Women (LRIW) is accepting applications for the 2007-2008 LRIW Scholarship Program. The organization will award two $3,000 scholarships to the best-qualified applicants.

The program is open to the dependent son, daughter, stepchild or grandchild of a rail industry employee who is a member in good standing or employed by a current corporate sponsor. To qualify, applicants must be entering their sophomore year and be enrolled in a four- or five-year program leading to a bachelor’s or masters degree. Member applicants must be enrolled as part-time students; dependent applicants must be enrolled as full-time students.

Interested applicants must provide the LRIW Scholarship Committee a résumé, certified transcript (through Dec. 31, 2005), two letters of recommendation, an essay and application. The essay question is: If you were to start a new railroad in the year 2010, which railroad, including a short line or regional railroad, would you model it after and why?

The committee’s criteria for awarding the scholarships is based on: 40 percent academic achievement, 40 percent citizenship and character, and 20 percent essay content.

All application materials are due to the committee by July 1. The committee will inform successful applicants on or before Aug. 1.

The LRIW’s primary objective is to create a format within the rail industry that provides women the opportunity to achieve a broader understanding of the railroad business.
