advertisement
Earlier this year, the Canadian government implemented a program to transfer federal gas tax revenues to help build sustainable communities. Yesterday, the governments of Canada and Alberta broke ground on the Edmonton South Light Rail Transit system extension — the first project to obtain funding under the New Deal for Cities and Communities program.
The project will extend light-rail service from University Station to Heritage Mall.
Under the New Deal program, the federal government will provide $108 million to the city of Edmonton during the next five years.
