Logistics Park II: BNSF to build intermodal facility in southern California

Two years after opening BNSF Logistics Park-Chicago, Burlington Northern Santa Fe is finalizing plans to build a similar intermodal facility in southern California. Today, the Class I announced it will begin constructing BNSF Logistics Center-Fontana in the Kaiser Commerce Center west of San Bernardino by year end. BNSF expects to complete the 38-acre facility in third-quarter 2005.

Located on a dedicated spur with direct access to a BNSF mainline and near other rail-served facilities, the center will offer transload services for all commodities, including bulk, dimensional and those that require warehousing. Global distributor ProLogis plans to develop an 849,000-square-foot, rail-served warehouse adjacent to the center.

"By locating this rail-served transload facility near existing intermodal facilities, and distribution and warehousing centers, BNSF can offer shippers more modal choices and greater service options," said Fritz Draper, BNSF vice president of business development, in a prepared statement.

The facility also will enable the railroad to improve distribution processes within its carload network to provide more consistent service, BNSF officials believe.
