London transit system wins award for fare-collection system

Transport for London recently received the "Modernizing Government Award" for its PRESTIGE automated fare-collection system and Oyster® card, recognizing the system for its contribution of innovative information and communications technology to improve government efficiency and modernize services.

The award is one of several New Media awards presented annually in the United Kingdom.

Introduced at the end of 2003, PRESTIGE/Oyster was developed by the TranSys consortium, led by Cubic Transportation Systems and EDS. Cubic designed, manufactured, installed and is maintaining the system; EDS is operating the system.

The Oyster card is a rechargeable, reusable public transport smart card that enables passengers to pre-pay for tickets for any mode of transportation online, or at stations, rail ticket offices or London travel information centers.
