Later this year, the Port of Long Beach, Calif., will mark its 100th anniversary. On June 2, 1911, the first delivery — a shipment of lumber from the Pacific Northwest — arrived at the port.

To commemorate its centennial, the port launched a new website, www.polb.com/100years, that chronicles the facility’s progress toward becoming North America’s second-busiest seaport. The site features remembrances, a photographic timeline, and a page where community members can post their own port photographs, videos and stories.

Throughout 2011, regular events — such as public tours and the Green Port Fest — will feature historical themes to reflect the centennial, according to port. In addition, the port plans to hold several special events.

Today, the facility handles more than $100 billion worth of trade annually and sustains more than 300,000 jobs in southern California, according to the port.
