In October, the Port of Long Beach, Calif., handled 613,621 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) — up 35.6 percent compared with October 2009's volume and the highest monthly level in three years.
Imports jumped 33.5 percent to 303,168 TEUs, only the second time imports topped 300,000 units since November 2007, according to the port. Exports climbed 26.3 percent to 150,581 TEUs while empty container moves soared 50.6 percent to 159,872 TEUs.
Meanwhile, the Port of Los Angeles in October handled 682,384 TEUs, up 5.4 percent year over year. Imports rose 3.2 percent to 349,545 TEUs while exports inched up 0.3 percent to 151,048 TEUs.
Imports dropped slightly vs. September, “signaling that the annual ‘peak shipping season’ push to stock up for the end-of-year holidays has subsided,” L.A. port officials said in a volume report. “October’s volumes are in line with the typical pattern of post-peak declines.”
