Los Angeles MTA receives $16 million in state security funds

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) recently received $16.1 million in security funds from the state's homeland security office as part of annual funding earmarked for transit security through the Proposition 1B bond measure approved by voters in 2006.

The authority will use proceeds to implement a gating system on the Metro Red and Purple lines, as well as at selected light-rail stations. During the next 18 to 24 months, LACMTA will install a total of 379 fare gates, which will reduce the need for fare inspectors and enable law enforcement officers to focus primarily on station security.
