U.S. Sen. Trent Lott (D-Miss.) recently was appointed chairman of the Surface Transportation and Merchant Marine Subcommittee of the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.
The subcommittee deals with issues affecting railroads (including Amtrak), trucks, ports, hazardous materials transportation, transportation research, pipelines, automobiles and motorist safety.
Chairman of the committee's aviation subcommittee during the 108th Congress, Lott plans to address freight-rail and railroad safety issues early in the new congressional session.
