Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) recently added a third explosive-detection canine team to screen the Hartsfield International Airport station.
Certified by Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the team recently completed an 11-week training course at San Antonio’s Lackland Air Force Base. Teams are recertified each year during tests that include aircraft, luggage, terminal, cargo and vehicle searches, and require dogs to search areas quickly and accurately.
The explosive-detection canine team began as a pilot program in 2000. MARTA was the first transit agency to receive TSA-certified dogs, according to a prepared statement.
TSA now has 289 teams working at 64 airports. MARTA expects to add up to three more canine teams at the airport station during the next two years.
