This month and next, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) will host a series of public workshops and public hearings to discuss a proposed fare increase.

The authority has proposed increasing base fares from $1.25 to $1.70 and monthly passes from $44 to $62 to help make up a projected $70 million fiscal-year 2007 budget shortfall.

The fare increase is expected to generate 25 percent more revenue.
