The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) board recently approved spending $3 million to increase the number of security cameras in the subway system by more than 60 percent.

The authority will use U.S. Department of Homeland Security funds to add 186 cameras throughout the system, bringing the total number of cameras in subway stations to 488. Once the project is complete in April, every station on the Red, Green, Orange, Blue and Silver lines will be equipped with cameras.

Security officials will monitor images from the security cameras at several locations, including the MBTA Operations Control Center, Transit Police Department and Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency’s “bunker” in Framingham.
