Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) is launching initiatives designed to improve service on the busiest portion of the Green Line — the B branch, which includes 22 trolley stops along 3.9 track miles.
The authority recently launched a "Show-N-Go" program at four stations to shorten dwell times by enabling monthly pass holders to board trains through rear doors.
MBTA also has added more two-car trains on nights and weekends to serve two colleges along the branch, extended platforms to accommodate three-car trains, and invested $6 million for trackwork and platform reconstruction.
On April 20, MBTA will implement a "Stop Elimination" pilot program aimed at reducing trip times along the line. Trolleys will bypass four stops during a six- to eight-month trial program. The stops were chosen based on the average number of boardings and proximity to other stops.
In addition, the authority will open the "SuperStation" at North Station in June. The station is designed to combine the Orange and Green lines’ platforms at an underground station, enabling passengers to more quickly and easily transfer from one subway line to another.
