The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) plans to up the accessibility ante at Longwood Station. The authority recently approved a measure to design and construct an accessible route from Riverway Park to the station.

The plan is not part of the original scope of work aimed at improving the station’s accessibility for disabled persons, which calls for lengthening the inbound and outbound platforms, building new ramps and shelters, and adding new lighting, signage and other amenities. MBTA will make similar improvements at Brookline Village Station as part of its light-rail accessibility program.

The authority will spend $2 million at both stations to improve accessibility. Work is scheduled to be complete by the end of winter. The improvements are part of phase two of MBTA’s D Branch Rehabilitation Project on the Green Line, which includes replacing ties, cutting trees and brush, upgrading signal and power systems, cleaning and improving ditches and drainage, and surfacing and aligning track.
