Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) passengers now can use their cellular phones and other wireless devices in some of the subway system’s busiest areas.
For the first time, the train tunnels connecting four downtown Boston stations, as well as station platforms, will accommodate wireless service. The authority expects to add more stations and tunnels to the underground wireless network during the next two years.
System designer and installer InSite Wireless L.L.C. will operate the wireless infrastructure, which enables multiple cellular providers to deliver wireless services to passengers. The system is designed to deliver seamless coverage from above ground to underground station platforms, walkways and trains.
Under a 15-year license agreement with InSite Wireless, MBTA will receive a minimum of $4 million. As the wireless network expands to other parts of the subway system, the parties will negotiate additional license fees.
