Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
MHF Logistical Solutions (MHF-LS) recently introduced new software designed to improve its “smart rail cars” cargo protection initiative.
GPS Fleet Watch integrates data generated by satellite-linked location tracking and cargo monitoring equipment with information on weather conditions, maps of nationwide rail traffic, and databases containing information about communities located along rail lines.
The software enables smart railcar users to obtain updated reports on the whereabouts and status of their cargo, and more quickly deal with emergencies. For example, if a rail car releases hazardous materials, GPS Fleet Watch software can immediately obtain detailed information about the location’s weather patterns, proximity to other rail traffic and nearby population centers. The software also features tools to help users communicate with emergency responders.
Under its smart rail car initiative — introduced last year — MHF-LS equips rail cars with wireless devices and sensor equipment that are linked via satellite to MHF-LS’ back office reporting and operations systems.
