R&D magazine recently recognized General Atomics’ and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s (LLNL) Inductrack Magnetic Levitation System as one of the country’s top 100 most technologically significant new products.

Originally invented at LLNL, Inductrack is being further developed as part of General Atomics’ Urban Maglev program. General Atomics currently is building a full-scale, 400-foot test track with a full-sized vehicle chassis, and associated power and control systems at its San Diego facility.

Inductrack features un-powered magnets placed beneath a vehicle, which is levitated by interacting with a track comprising conductors assembled in an array resembling a ladder with close-packed rungs, according to a prepared statement.

Urban Maglev is being developed as part of the Urban Magnetic Levitation Transit Technology Development Program, funded by the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century.
