In March, the Transportation Services Index (TSI) reached 109.7, up 1.4 percent from February’s level and 4 percent from March 2010’s mark, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).

The Freight TSI climbed 1.9 percent vs. February to 108.6, the highest level since July 2008, BTS said. On a year-over-year basis, the index rose 4.8 percent. Freight shipments measured by the Freight TSI increased in 17 of the 23 months prior to March.

The Passenger TSI in March inched up 0.2 percent vs. February to 113.1. The index also increased 2.1 percent compared with March 2010’s level.

In the first quarter, the TSI rose 1 percent and Freight TSI increased 1.3 percent — both marking their seventh consecutive quarterly increase since second-quarter 2009 — and Passenger TSI inched up 0.2 percent following a decline in the previous quarter.
