Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) recently announced it will close four Maryland Rail Commuter (MARC) stations March 6.

Due to “extremely low ridership and escalating capital costs,” the St. Denis and Jessup stations on the Camden Line, and the Dickerson and Boyds stations on the Brunswick Line will be shut down. The combined average daily ridership for the stations is 41 passengers – the system’s lowest, according to the administration.

“These four stations simply don’t generate the ridership necessary to justify the investment required to keep them operating and safe,” said Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary Robert Flanagan in a prepared statement.

To keep the stations open, MTA would have to install new ticket vending machines, upgrade signage and public address systems, add passenger warning systems and improve platforms. The stations are within four miles of other MARC stations.
