MassDOT seeks applications for industrial rail grants

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation this week opened applications for a new round of funding from the Industrial Rail Access Program for fiscal-year 2024.

The program provides state funds to freight-rail-supported businesses for projects designed to expand or improve rail or freight access, or support economic opportunity, safety and job growth, MassDOT officials said in a press release.

Applications are due June 1. Applicants must match grant funding by at least 40% of a project’s cost.

"Sometimes a business just needs additional railroad track on their property, a larger loading dock, or equipment to off-load goods in order to grow, and this grant program offers those businesses an opportunity to leverage funds to make these critical investments,” said MassDOT Secretary and CEO Gina Fiandaca.

Last year, the state awarded $3.1 million to seven projects expected to support 13,000 added rail-car deliveries.
