Memphis distribution center to help prosper CN's paper business

Canadian National Railway Co. Dec. 5 opened its $5 million Memphis, Tenn., distribution center, designed to handle multi-commodity rail-to-truck transfers.
However, CN plans to use the 60,000-square-foot facility to focus on paper products: The distribution center's high ceilings, smooth reinforced floors, inventory tracking system and quality control features would accommodate more-seamless transfers of paper rolls.
"Memphis is the distribution crossroads of North America, with 43 percent of America's population living within 600 miles of the city," said Terry McManaman, CN Gulf Division vice president, in a prepared statement.
The opening of the distribution center — which also features 20-car lumber and metals, and 48-car plastics transfer areas — follows CN's July unveiling of a metals distribution center in Hamilton, Ontario.
