MTA Metro-North Railroad's Harmon Wheel Truing Facility recently received two awards from the American Society of Civil Engineers — the Lower Hudson Valley Branch's 2008 Small Project of the Year and the Metropolitan Section's 2008 Design-Build Project of the Year.
Located in Metro-North's Harmon Yard, the wheel truing facility is the first in North America to feature a tandem wheel lathe for truing wheel sets, enabling Metro-North to cut four wheels simultaneously instead of the typical two wheels per axle, according to a prepared statement. The facility opened in September 2007 and previously was named "Project of the Year" by the Design-Build Insitute of America, New York Tri-State Metro Region.
Metro-North contracted Gannett Fleming to prepare the design-build construction documents, Simmons Machine Tool Corp. to supply the tandem wheel truing machine, and a Slattery Skanska/ECCO III/Edwards & Kelcey consortium to complete final design and construct the facility.
