Miami-Dade Transit recently obtained Federal Transit Administration (FTA) approval to begin acquiring land for the 9.5-mile North Corridor. The agency also will advance design work for the project.

The $1.4 billion extension will run from the agency’s existing Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza station to the Broward County Line, and serve the Calder Race Course, Dolphin Stadium and Miami Dade College’s North Campus. Miami-Dade Transit expects to complete preliminary engineering for the line in March 2008, obtain FTA approval to begin final design in September 2008, obtain a Full Funding Grant Agreement in October 2009 and begin construction in 2010.

The North Corridor is one of three Metrorail extensions included in the People’s Transportation Plan, which was approved by voters in 2002. The plan also calls for a 2.4-mile extension from Metrorail’s Earlington Heights station to the Miami Intermodal Center (MIC) and a 10.1-mile East-West Corridor that would run from MIC to Florida International University’s Tamiami campus.
