Yesterday, the House Republican Conference confirmed Rep. John Mica (R-Fla.) as chairman of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure in the 112th Congress.

Mica will become Florida’s first full chairman of the transportation committee, which retains jurisdiction over the nation’s rail and transit systems, highways, aviation system and other systems. He previously served as the committee’s Republican leader. From 2000 to 2006, Mica chaired the Aviation Subcommittee.

“We must begin immediately to address the significant needs and challenges facing our nation’s infrastructure and create jobs,” said Mica in a prepared statement. “With limited resources, cutting red tape to complete stalled projects and better utilization of the federal government’s assets are top priorities. It is critical that Congress jumpstarts transportation projects to rebuild our nation’s crumbling infrastructure and get people working.”
