Last month, Michigan Tech University’s Railroad Engineering and Activities Club (REAC) became the first student chapter of the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association.

On Feb. 21, 65 Michigan Tech students, faculty and administrators participated in the club’s first annual “Railroad Night, which was sponsored by BNSF Railway Co., CSX Transportation and Union Pacific Railroad. The event included a presentation by UP General Director of Human Resources Operations Bob Kraft.

Last year, several Michigan Tech students formed REAC to revitalize the university’s railroad engineering education program and increase the rail industry’s visibility among students and the general public. The club — which has about 40 members — recently organized a field trip to Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad and currently is helping local Boy Scout troops earn railroading merit badges.
