Midwest foundation seeks scholarship applicants

The newly formed Midwest Rail Craft Scholarship Foundation (MWRCSF) is accepting 2004 scholarship applications for children of railroad workers in Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Texas, Minnesota, Nebraska and Illinois.

The foundation's board — comprising railroad and rail-labor union representatives — expects to award $1,000 scholarships to a number of applicants, depending on fund-raising efforts.

"Our objective is to concentrate the scholarship applicants geographically [and across all crafts] in correspondence to the enormous support we have had from railroad workers in [the Midwest]," said MWRCSF President Greg Shy in a prepared statement

The foundation plans to raise funds by obtaining contributions and sponsorships, as well as conducting annual golf tournaments, including events to be held May 2-3 in the Kansas City, Mo., area and Sept. 26-27 near Lincoln, Neb. MWRCSF also might create an endowment.

Due April 1, applications are available on Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen division of the Rail Conference of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters' Web site at http://www.ble.org/pr/pdf/MWRCSFApplication04.pdf.
