The Federal Transportation Administration recently awarded three grants totaling $32.2 million to help improve transit services in Minnesota’s Twin Cities.

Regional planning organization Metropolitan Council will use an $18.4 million grant to fund design services and 24 rail cars already in service on the Hiawatha Corridor light-rail line. Scheduled to be complete in December, the partially open line will extend from the downtown Minneapolis Warehouse District to the southern suburb of Bloomington. The 17-station line will include stops at the Metrodome, Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and the Mall of America.

The agency will use the remainder of the grant to fund job access and reverse commute van programs, and purchase buses.
