The Federal Railroad Administration recently awarded a $795,280 grant to the city of Springfield, Mo., to study ways to re-route and grade separate rail traffic.

The city plans to determine alternate routes for Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Union Pacific Railroad, and Missouri & Northern Arkansas Railroad Co. Inc. trains. Re-routing freight-rail traffic will help city officials revitalize Springfield's central city and the Jordan Valley Park neighborhood, according to a prepared statement.

Officials also plan to analyze ways to grade separate Division Street, the Chestnut Expressway and James River Freeway, which have experienced highway and train traffic congestion in recent years.

"These studies will help provide Springfield with more economic opportunities while reducing traffic delays caused by trains," said acting FRA Administrator Betty Monro.
