The Greenbrier Cos. Inc. subsidiary Gunderson Rail Services recently received a nearly $20 million order for 100 new-generation and 106 modified refrigerated box cars from Cryo-Trans, a company specializing in the development and leasing of frozen-product rail cars.

Shells for the new cars will be built at Gunderson Inc.'s Portland, Ore., plant with the rest of the work to be done at Gunderson Rail Services' Springfield, Ore., facility, including the installation of refrigeration units, satellite sensors and side plug doors, according to a prepared statement.

Gunderson Rail Services plans to convert the existing 106 cryogenic box cars into mechanically refrigerated box cars at its Tri-Cities, Wash., plant. The work includes installing nose-mount refrigeration units and fuel tanks, and Global Positioning Systems that would enable Cryo-Trans to operate and manage cars via the Internet.

Because of Cryo-Trans' and other recent orders, Greenbrier plans in the near future to add 100 workers at Gunderson's Portland facility, and 30 workers each at Gunderson's Springfield and Tri-Cities plants.

During the past year, Gunderson Rail Services modified more than 100 refrigerated box cars for Cryo-Trans at its Tri-Cities location.
