Ninety-four percent of rural U.S. residents live within 25 miles of a rail or bus station, or small airport, and within 75 miles of medium and large airports, according to a Bureau of transportation Statistics (BTS) mapping analysis. More than one-third of rural residents live within the service area of all three transportation modes.

However, BTS determined there are transportation-service gaps in every state except Delaware, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Beginning this month, BTS plans to release a series of analytical reports on rural intercity transportation availability.
