Yesterday, the New Jersey Transit board approved contracts for two station improvement projects.

The board authorized a $1.4 million contract to Daidone Electric Inc. to upgrade the customer communication systems at Paterson Station as part of the final phase of a rehabilitation project. The contractor also will install new LED and LCD customer information signs that will display up-to-the-minute service messages at the platform and street levels. In addition, Daidone Electric will upgrade closed-circuit television cameras and install a new remote elevator monitoring and control system at the station. Work is scheduled to begin in July and be complete in early 2009.

The board also authorized a $1.4 million contract to DMR Construction Serivces Inc. to restore the original exterior of the historic Rutherford Station on the Bergen County Line. The first of a two-phase rehabilitation program, the project calls for designing and restoring the masonry; cleaning the brick, sandstone, limestone and bluestone; restoring the copper-clad window enclosures; and repairing and replacing window sills, doors, exterior columns and soffits.

The project is scheduled to begin in summer and be complete in 2009. Built in 1898, Rutherford Station serves about 940 passengers each weekday. The $1.9 million second phase to restore the station’s interior will be funded entirely with federal dollars.
