NJ Transit board member receives recognition as minority leader

New Jersey Transit Board Director Flora Castillo recently received the 2003 Emerging Leader of the Year award at Conference of Minority Transportation Officials’ (COMTO) national convention.

In 1999, New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman appointed Castillo to NJ Transit’s board, making her the first-ever and only Latina to serve the passenger road’s board. Castillo currently chairs the customer service and administration committees, overseeing a $2 billion budget and 10,500 employees.

The New Jersey COMTO chapter — which Castillo formed a year ago — also received Chapter of the Year for the country’s largest chapter with more than 200 members. A member of COMTO’s national board, Castillo is working to implement a leadership program and other initiatives for COMTO members.
