The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) and New Jersey Transit recently unveiled their proposed $2.7 billion fiscal-year 2006 Transportation Capital Program.

To be funded by state and federal dollars, the budget includes $1.1 billion for NJ Transit.

The agency plans to invest $426 million in infrastructure improvements to maintain its system. The budget also includes funds to overhaul 148 Comet III and Comet IV cars, replace 230 Arrow III rail cars, and improve bridges, tunnels and security.

NJ Transit will spend $88 million to improve stations, including Newark Broad Street, Metropark, South Amboy and Trenton. In addition, NJ Transit will continue building a trans-Hudson rail tunnel and Meadowlands rail line, and expanding parking capacity.
