Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
New Jersey Transit recently announced plans to open two new stations and implement service improvements later this month on the Hudson-Bergen light-rail system.
On Feb. 11, the agency will begin operating more two-car trains during peak periods to keep pace with ridership, which is up about 25 percent in first-quarter 2006 compared with the same 2005 period.
NJ Transit also will reduce headways from every six minutes to every five minutes in core sections of the system and increase departures from endpoint terminals from 12 minutes to 10 minutes.
In addition, the agency will begin offering direct service between stations north and south of Hoboken Terminal so passengers won’t have to transfer at Hoboken.
On Feb. 25, NJ Transit also will begin servicing the Bergenline Avenue Station in Union City and Tonnelle Avenue Station in North Bergen, which will become the northern terminus of the system. NJ Transit will launch full service at Port Imperial Station, which opened for weekend-only service in October.
The five-year-old Hudson-Bergen line includes 20 stations between Bayonne, Jersey City, Hoboken and Weehawken.
